Last week on the sandy shores of Perdido Key, I had an existential crisis crossing the threshold into my 30s. Jokes aside, I did take some time to reflect on lessons learned, successes and failures alike.
I compiled some thoughts over the past few days, half-curious if I'll share these sentiments or mock them in another ten years (assuming the Internet hasn't been replaced by whatever hellscape Zuckerberg comes up with).
Anyways, here's 30 things I’ve learned in 30 years:
Time spent on your passions is never wasted.
Not everyone who comes into your life is meant to stay there.
Sometimes, silence is the best response.
Regardless of how much money you make, you'll always find a way to spend it (or your spouse will).
Simply inviting someone - to an event, a meal or conversation - is often one of the kindest gestures you can make.
The strongest relationships are built on vulnerability.
For the people who love you, suicide isn't painless.
Sports fans are just nerds with more socially acceptable interests.
You can apologize, you can make amends, but you can never take back a word spoken in anger.
Staying in with a good group of people is superior to any club or bar experience out there.
Absolutely no one cares that you're taking a break from social media.
Success is born in consistency.
Never rush into a big decision without praying, and once you commit, see it through all the way.
Your political party is not a personality.
Accepting your lack of control is the single healthiest thing you can do for your mental health. As Elsa says, let it go.
Just because someone is your best friend, doesn't mean you're theirs.
Those who are the loudest about their identity are often the most unsure of who they are. Be kind anyway.
Music is one of the most influential forces in existence.
If I'd waited until I was "ready" to become a dad, I would have never become one.
