Exposed

Writer's picture: David JohnsonDavid Johnson

Oh, you? I know you.

You were the independent one, the one they didn’t worry about.

You were shaped by the world to comfort others in failure but refuse to accept your own.

You built an illusive wall of strength and painted it with hollow achievements.

Your struggles were silenced by defensive and self-imposed expectations.

Perfectionist.

Overachiever.

Type A.

Labels that spoke to a deeper dysfunction that you never felt safe enough to share.

Should the facade ever crack, should any authentic darkness ever surface, you scramble. You retreat.

You’re swallowed by the repressed ocean of your identity. Your REAL identity.

The you that’s human.

The you that longs to be chosen first.

The you that needs to be held.

Friend, lay it down.

And for the sake of your children, and your children’s children, end the cycle.

Choose them first.

Challenge their independence.

Give them sloppy kisses and crushing hugs while they protest and push away.

Put your hands in the cracks and pull them wide, tear at the foundations of expectation, expose the beautiful imperfection of who they are.

Then, stand with them in the rubble.

And just love them.
